Start a Walking Program
A fine walking program is an effective way to gradually ease yourself into an exercise program, especially if you consider yourself out of shape or an inexperienced exercise novice. The advantages of walking are legendary, as many people can testify. You can walk as slow or as fast as you like so you can adjust it according to your comfort level. If you’re really out of shape, you can just start with a few minutes and gradually work up to a 30 minute walk, a 60 minute walk, and then perhaps a 90 minutes if you can do it.
Before you start a walking program, make an appointment to see your doctor especially if you currently have health problems. After your doctor gives you the approval, you can discuss how you can start and how long you can do it. Your body will need some time to acclimate itself to your new pastime. Remember not to overdo it, start your routine at a gradual pace so you get used to it. A safe way to walk is to start at around three days a week at a normal walking pace. You can time yourself, so bring your watch with you to keep track of the time. Also print out a walking log from the Internet or buy a log book so you can keep track of the time you spend walking.
What’s so great about walking? First of all, it’s inexpensive as you do not have to pay a health club membership to walk. It’s not too boring as you can vary your route so the scenery changes. Take a friend or walking buddy with you and you will find that time will go by much faster with as you take your stroll. You can walk as little or as long as you want, and it is to your benefit to walk at least 10 or 15 minutes to start, with your doctor’s permission.
Most people already know that walking promotes heart health as well as facilitates bone and joint support. Instead of snacking fatty foods when you are under stress, you can burn calories and fat by moving your body. You will have a more restful sleep and feel more energetic so you can tackle the problems of the day. And oddly enough when you walk routinely you will increase your heart’s rate but because of the exercise, the resting rate will be lower. Get started, because you have nothing to lose except a few calories and burn some unwanted fat in the bargain.
