What is Pilates?

What is Pilates and what exactly does it do for people?  First, Pilates was invented in the early 1900’s by German Joseph Pilates.  The Pilates program focuses on the mind to have power over the muscles, so that the spine remains the focal point with breathing and attentiveness.  Continuous and gentle movement as well as awareness of the body core is the fundamental center of the Pilates philosophy. Before you begin any Pilates program, you should discuss it with your doctor first.

Pilates is not a temporary fad, as many athletes and fitness buffs swear by the results that Pilates offers, when practiced correctly.   Fitness experts have the research to show that Pilates has the results to show that  it is very useful as a fitness routine and in addition as a vital complement to  sports training and  many types of physical rehabilitation.  Dances for years have practiced Pilates and now classes are happening in gyms, fitness centers, physical therapy practices, lavish spas and wellness or fitness centers internationally.

What are the benefits of Pilates for those who take it seriously? When practiced diligently, Pilates offers abundant advantages.  People who practice may develop larger lung capacity and through breathing techniques and practice.   With diligence stomach and back muscles may gain strength and suppleness.  Remember that Pilates also focuses on mixing the muscles, mental attitude, and movement in order to become fully successful.  You can increase the strength of your core  and improve your posture, as well as get positive self esteem and increased self confidence.

When done correctly and gently, Pilates helps people with joints and rehabilitates weak and underused muscles.  It is especially good for senior citizens, the overweight, as well as the consummate athlete who needs it for the sport he or she practices.  Older people can benefit greatly from Pilates as other forms of aerobics, yoga, and cardiovascular activities may prove to be very tough on their joints.  Pilates is a great option or choice for older people because it diminishes the chance of injury from other forms of exercise such as lifting weights.

So Pilates is solid form of exercise for senior citizens to stay strong because it is prudent and reliable compared other exercises that increase the risk of injury.  Older adults that are not very active can do some of the exercises in Pilates as they can be done sitting or with very low stress impact movements, which makes them easy to do. But much younger people and athletes can gain a lot of positive results also, when they use Pilates to enhance their other exercise routines.
